Skype for iPhone now live in US

It's finally here, and even a few minutes early. Skype for iPhone is now available in the US iTunes store, free of charge. We've heard great thing from the folks in Japan who've been fiddling with it for the last twelve hours, and so far it's sounding pretty good for us, too, with only minor hiccups. Not sure if it's a glitch, but despite what we heard earlier, we seem to be able to dial out while on 3G and not over WiFi (at least running OS 3.0 beta). Hit up the read link for quickest route to the app store page, and let us know what you think. Betcha wish you could ditch that AT&T voice plan now, huh?

Tutorial: Convert video to iPhone, HD Videos to iPhone 3G

Update: We're getting reports the app is crashing for jailbroken iPhones -- and possibly non-jailbroken ones as well. We just got our first denial when dialing out over 3G via a popup notification, but it only happened once and we were back to old habits one call later. We did experience a brief period where no sound was coming through, but that might have something to do with using OS 3.0 and was remedied by restarting the phone.

Update 2: So far, it looks like dialing over 3G's only working for those with OS 3.0 beta, but unfortunately all of us in that situation are now suffering from frequent crashes and loss of audio. Things seem to be going smoothly for those running the latest non-beta firmware, but the calls only work over WiFi. That said, when using the app as intended (non-beta firmware over WiFi), audio quality was surprisingly good, far better than any third party apps we've used.

iPhone 3.0 beta 2 released, push notifications are a go

The rest of the mobile industry might be gearing up for CTIA to start, but Apple's phone elves are toiling away -- iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2's just been released to developers, along with the go-ahead to start developing for push notifications. Thankfully, beta 2 also apparently includes a number of stability and performance enhancements, which will hopefully make our tester phone tolerable again -- we've been restarting beta 1 basically every day since we sacrificed it to the hands-on gods. Devs and beta testers know what to do to snag the upgrade, let us know how it goes!

Changes in Beta 2

There's reportedly a new menu item in the system preferences labeled "Store" that contains no data.

The build runs much faster than beta 1 and includes substantial stability improvements.

No other changes are being reported at this time.

AT&T to offer unsubsidized iPhone 3G with no commitment required?

(From:engadget)For existing AT&T subscribers looking to get a new handset for a few months before they make that inevitable Pre / iPhone 3.0 / Gizmondo decision this summer -- or folks who just despise contracts in general -- it looks like AT&T will be offering unsubsidized iPhone 3Gs at last. According to some training slides obtained by The Boy Genius, the "no-commit" price will only be available to existing customers, and will run them $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB.

Sounds like somebody's looking to flush a bit of stock, or perhaps they've finally decided to almost treat the phone like pretty much every single other device on the market -- wild times we're living in, folks. The no-commit option should be available as of March 26th.

Create FREE iPhone ringtones using iTunes 8

By Will Park on Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 5:50 PM PST In Announcements, Apple

Remember those good, old days when creating an iPhone ringtone was as easy as renaming a song in your iTunes library to a “.m4r” extension and then syncing it back with your iPhone? No? Well, trust us when we say that iPhone ringtones were never easier (or free-er) to create.
That is, until iTunes 8. With the release of iTunes 8 - which brought with it Genius Playlists - creating iPhone ringtones has once again become a painless process. iTunes 8 allows the user to customize a particular song’s start- and end-time, paving the way for an iPhone ringtone creation “hack” that requires nothing more than iTunes itself.

Keep in mind that iTunes will allow you to create a ringtone from a song downloaded through the iTunes Music Store, but those ringtones come with fees… and no one likes fees. Follow this guide to create free iPhone ringtones for free using nothing more than iTunes.

To create simple, free iPhone ringtones from your iTunes library, follow these steps:

Note: This process works with MP3, ACC, and AIFF files.
Note: Only DRM-free songs can be used with this ringtone creation process.

Any song downloaded from iTunes Music Store will have DRM (Digital Rights Management), so don’t use those songs.

Any song ripped from a CD or downloaded from DRM-free sources (P2P, Amazon, your friend) will work just fine.

Fire up iTunes 8
Find the song you’d like to turn in to a ringtone

Select the song you want to use as your iPhone ringtone
Right click on the song
Select “Get Info”
Hit the “Options” tab
Check both the “Start Time” and “End Time” boxes

Customize the start and end times for your ringtone clip
Specify what time interval you’d like to use as your ringtone clip
Click “OK”
Make sure the song you want is still highlighted
Click on “Advanced” in your menu bar
Select “Create AAC Version” or “Create Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) Lossless Version” (Make sure your iTunes “Import Settings” are set to “AAC” or “Apple Lossless” and not “MP3″)

You want to create a duplicate song file with the customized playing time
A duplicate copy of your song will appear in iTunes - this new song will have the same filename but shorter “Time”
Go back to the original song and uncheck those “Start Time” and “End Time” boxes

See the duplicate song underneath the original song?
Drag the duplicate song to your Desktop

Duplicate song file on Desktop
Once the duplicate song is copied to your Desktop, delete the duplicate file in iTunes

Notice that the duplicate song file is gone - deleted
On your Desktop, rename the file with the “.m4r” file extension - Use the new extension
This turns your song file into an iPhone ringtone file

Use the new filename extension

The .m4r file is now a ringtone file
Your “songname.m4a” file should now be named “songname.m4r”
Drag the newly renamed .m4r (songname.m4r) file back into iTunes
Drag the file over the “Library” column and release when “Library” becomes highlighted.

You have to delete the duplicate song file (Step 12) otherwise iTunes won’t import your new .m4r file.

You should see your new ringtone under “Ringtones” in iTunes
Sync your iPhone to get jiggy with your new iPhone ringtones!
Enjoy your free iPhone ringtone library!

iPhone apps round-up: Business tools for the New Year

Also released: ECOcal, Me2, WindGuru, TimeLapse

As people get ready to return to work after two weeks of holiday festivities, it seems fitting to turn our attention to a pair of business and productivity iPhone and iPod touch apps that have debuted in the App Store recently.

Instaviz

First up is Instaviz , a graph sketching program from Pixelglow Software. The $10 application takes any rough sketches you’ve drawn on the screen of your iPhone or iPod touch and transforms them into neatly drawn ellipses, circles, rectangles, squares, and other shapes. If you add a line between two shapes, the app redraws your graph accordingly.

Pixelglow bills the app as a way to turn your iPhone into a brainstorming tool.

You’re able to zoom in and scroll using familiar touchscreen finger gestures. You can also export any finished graphs to box.net, MobileMe, or any WebDAV server in DOT/GV and PDF formats. Pixelglow has posted a YouTube video of Instaviz in action.

Meanwhile, iMNotes from RERLSoft promises over-the-air access to sticky notes for Microsoft Exchange users. The $4 app lets you create, edit, view, and search Outlook sticky notes in real-time. You can also create a note on your iPhone or iPod touch and watch it appear on Outlook.

The app supports standard installations of Exchange 2003 (SP1) and 2007 with Outlook Web access enabled. Note that RERLSoft requires you to test your Exchange system’s compatibility by downloading the free iMContacts app, available elsewhere in the App Store.

ECOcal

Other apps of interest that were recently added or updated at the App Store include:

  • ECOcal , from Antenna Theater: The $6 app provides an interactive daily calendar of the Earth and sky along with extensive information about astronomical and terrestrial events. Watch a video of ECOcal in action.
  • Referee , from Jobeck Software: The $1 novelty app lets you show soccer-style yellow and red cards to friends for offenses real and imagined, and keeps track of all the cards you've issued.
  • iResolutions , from HWC: Just in time for the new year, this $1 app lets you record your resolutions for 2009.
  • Me2 , from xyster.net: The free app lets you clone contacts between iPhones using sound and the iPhone's external speaker and microphone.
  • WindGuru , from Perceiveit: The free weather app features wind, wave, and weather data for more than 3,000 locations around the globe.
  • TimeLapse , from xyster.net: The $3 app automates the iPhone’s camera to create time-lapse photo sequences.
